STEM Enhancement Project in Lunar Exploration
Project Lead The Way, Inc. (PLTW) and NASA Goddard have partnered to develop a program designed to strengthen the pipeline of students from the K-12 system into undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. The partnership focuses on a middle school and high school cross-disciplinary project designed to infuse STEM content through an exciting Lunar Exploration theme.
NASA’s planetary space exploration program is designed to locate water and minerals that will support human life. If specific elements can be discovered through the exploration program, then it is known that humans can inhabit other planets and solar systems. The PLTW/NASA partnership has developed a one week training seminar for teachers. Teachers will utilize a cross-disciplinary approach to guide students through this learning experience. The Project in Lunar Exploration will provide students with the opportunity to design and manage a mission plan. Students will utilize STEM content knowledge to remotely explore a lunar surface.
- Schools that participate in this one week training will be required to bring a team composed of a Project Lead The Way® trained teacher, a math teacher, and a science teacher. The training will provide the school team with resources and strategies needed to implement this enhancement project at their school. During the summer of 2008, training will be held in Indiana and Texas. Each site will offer a training geared for 21 middle school teachers and 21 high school teachers. Based on the limited number of teachers that can be supported at each site, you are encouraged to apply early.
